The in vitro and in silico Anticholinesterase Ac-tivities of Brittle Star (Ophiocoma erinaceus) crude venoms from the Persian Gulf-Bushehr

Background: Brittle stars can produce well-known toxins responsible for various of their biological activities in addition to their physical defense. The purpose of this study was to identify secondary metabolites and assess the anticholinesterase activities of the crude venom of the Persian Gulf Ophiocoma erinaceous (brittle star) in vitro and in silico due to the abundance of this marine life...

Food for thought ... on in silico methods in toxicology.

this series of articles has already addressed in vitro and in vivo tools (Hartung, 2007; Hartung, 2008b). With this contribution addressing computational toxicology we now try to complete considerations on the main methodological approaches in toxicology. However, we do still plan to address specific aspects, such as endpoints (omics, image technologies), high-throughput testing or physiology-b...

Application of in silico modelling to estimate toxicity of migrating substances from food packaging.

This study derived toxicity estimates for a set of 136 chemical migrants from food packaging materials using in silico (computational) modelling and read across approaches. Where available, the predicted results for mutagenicity and carcinogenicity were compared with published experimental data. As the packaging compounds are subject to safety assessment, the migrating substances were more like...

How Far Chemistry and Toxicology are Computational Sciences?

In this chapter we describe the basis of computational chemistry and discuss how computational methods have been extended to biology, and toxicology in particular. Since about 20years, chemical experimentation is more and more replaced by modelling and virtual experimentation. Computer modelling of biological properties is still a debated topic. However, the need of safety assessment of chemica...

In Silico Toxicology – Non-Testing Methods

In silico toxicology in its broadest sense means "anything that we can do with a computer in toxicology." Many different types of in silico methods have been developed to characterize and predict toxic outcomes in humans and environment. The term non-testing methods denote grouping approaches, structure-activity relationship, and expert systems. These methods are already used for regulatory pur...
